have a mobile phone?

I read an article from The Age newspaper about a sub-culture of Japanese who rarely use a pc, if ever... they have been
dubbed "the thumb tribe". (pretty sick name!)

These people rely solely on their mobile phones for all of their "internet" activity. From instant messaging to text, email and mobile web browsing, these people do it all on their mobile!

I was actually inspired by this as I am an avid tech junkie :-) and have now set myself the goal of trying to do as much as I can on my mobiles to see if it can be done with the current technology we have in Australia.

I currently own a Nokia 6131 on Optus. I also use a Palm Zire 31 pda/organiser which I am trying to move away from as much as I can by beaming information across to my phone in an effort to become more of a thumb "tribesman".

My mobile experience may be somewhat limited as I live in country Victoria but you'd be surprised how well I am "managing" in my little experiment.

I currently have set up Gmail on my Nokia.

If you are a like minded person who can't live without their mobile tech then perhaps you feel like emailing me and let me know how you use it, the advantages and disadvantages?!?

Perhaps you hate what is available on mobiles at the moment? If so you can still email and tell me what you hate!

I know I'd love to hear from you all!

cheers,

Ubuntu Linux - FREE FREE FREE

you've probably all heard of linux and if you have you will know you can get it for free online but the versions you download for free ARE DIFFERENT from their "retail" equivalents... if you PAY for the retail versions you will get the whole operating system, not the cut down version with no support

UBUNTU Linux has stepped into the ring and has been delivering blows to the linux community for some time now by offering all their versions for FREE!!!... check them out at http://www.ubuntu.com/

I have copied the rest of this article (with permission from the Ubuntu Linux developers) from the Ubuntu website

What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a community developed operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Whether you use it at home, at school or at work Ubuntu contains all the applications you'll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

Ubuntu is and always will be free of charge. You do not pay any licensing fees. You can download, use and share Ubuntu with your friends, family, school or business for absolutely nothing.

We issue a new desktop and server release every six months. That means you'll always have the the latest and greatest applications that the open source world has to offer.

Ubuntu is designed with security in mind. You get free security updates for at least 18 months on the desktop and server. With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get three years support on the desktop, and five years on the server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version, we make our very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge.

Everything you need on one CD, which provides a complete working environment. Additional software is available online.

The graphical installer enables you to get up and running quickly and easily. A standard installation should take less than 25 minutes.

Once installed your system is immediately ready-to-use. On the desktop you have a full set of productivity, internet, drawing and graphics applications, and games.

On the server you get just what you need to get up and running and nothing you don't.

What does Ubuntu mean?

Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'Humanity to others', or 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

HandyShopper for Palm OS - by Chris Antos

If you have a Palm Organiser / PDA and you write anything in a list then HandyShopper is the FREEWARE program for you!

You may first look at this and say "I don't need a shopping program..!!!", it may be called HandyShopper but it isn't just a shopping program... it is actually a powerful "list / task / to-do" list program which is definitely worth the download.

I have had a Palm since they were first brought out by US Robotics and once I found this program it has gone with me from Palm to Palm as I have upgraded.

One example of how I have used this was when I was working as a storeman. Our inventory in the storeroom crept just over 10,000 parts and believe it or not, i had the entire parts list along with part descriptions all on my Palm with heaps of free memory for all my other apps...

download it, play with it!
