3 have upgraded their mobile broadband

3 have upgraded their network to HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet
Access)

if you have an HSDPA enabled mobile, Mobile Broadband Card or Mobile
Broadband USB modem, you can now surf the web roughtly 5 times faster
in 3's Broadband Zone!

i like the usb modem seeing as some laptops dont have a pc card slot
and even the oldest of laptops have a usb port

from the 3 website www.three.com.au - "fantastic downlink speeds
ranging from 600kbps to 1.5Mbps (with a theoretical maximum of
3.6Mbps) and an uplink speed of up to 384kbps"
it's good to see they mention the theoretical speeds as most isp's
dont even tell you this!

HipTop 3 now available on Tesltra!

for all you (and me included!) geeks out there Tesltra has introduced
the HipTop 3 device built by Sharp.

the HipTop is an all in one instant messaging (Yahoo and Hotmail),
email (ISP or Hotmail through the web browser plus your own "HipTop"
email address), web browsing, text and mms device with calendar also!

the thing which rocks about this product is that as you add a contact,
take a picture with the built in camera or add something to a calendar
it AUTOMATICALLY syncs "over the air" with your personal HipTop
account, which you can then access online. Imagine it, you add a
contact and a few seconds later it appears in your HipTop account
which you can access from any pc with a net connection! totally cool!

Telstra ain't famous for their pricing plans but I think this is worth
it - $30 per month for 24 months for ALL the IM chat, email, text and
mms you can send, calls are charged at 30c per 30c which is
compareable with Vodafone call rates...

you can view the HipTop 3 on the Telstra site at http://www.telstra.com.au/hiptop/index.htm
or go to telstra.com.au, click on mobile (under personal) then the
HipTop link is about the 8th down, also under personal...
I have uploaded the PDF guide for the hiptop so take a look under
Files in this group

Sync your Google calendar with your mobile or your PDA

just stumbled upon a part of google called GooSync which allows you to
sync your Google Calendar with your mobile phone or your PDA...

I'm in the process of setting it up now so I'll let you know how I go!

either do a Google search for "goosync" or follow the link below
http://www.goosync.com/

Gmail on Optus mobile

for anyone out there with Optus and thinking of using Gmail here is a
"quicker" way to do it (and use less time/data on your bill)

go to your phones browser, enter a new address, type http://gmail.com

after you enter your user name and password it will log you into your
Gmail account BUT before you start reading your emails take a look at
the top of the screen.

there should be a link saying something like "access Gmail faster" or
something similar... click this and it will download the Gmail
application for your mobile.
install the application, log in once more and you are greeted with a
"flashy" looking Gmail app right on your handset without having to go
through your mobile browser, saving you time, data and money!

Telstra Next G - trouble with ZTE phones

Telstra seems to have lost one or two of their Next G phones from
their Next G range!

The Telstra branded F850 and F851 phones (made by Chinese manufacturer
ZTE) have mysteriously been removed from the Telstra site after it was
reported that ZTE was having an abnormaly high number of returns for
these models.

ZTE claim the returns for these models is normal but it has been
claimed that it is as high as 35% above returns for phones from other
manufacturers.

These phones either turn themselves off or drop completely off the
network.
As a result you "should" be able to return these phones to your store
of purchase for an immediate replacement.

to Next G or not Next G? that is the question

just sitting here thinking about Telstra's Next G network...

should one move to Next G? i'm personaly not so sure. The other
networks all offer 3G services and some such as 3 currently deliver
their services in a "better" manner and seem to offer better value
plans for their customers...

what confuses me the most is Telstra currently offer Next G and 3G
phones for sale. Is Telstra's Next G network built to win the
customers that were previously on CDMA and before that, analogue?

Is the standard 3G a better network? I do know the original roll out
of the Next G network saw customers experiencing even poorer coverage
than their counterparts on CDMA (at least where I live in the bush)
your thoughts? experiences?

have a mobile phone?

I read an article from The Age newspaper about a sub-culture of Japanese who rarely use a pc, if ever... they have been
dubbed "the thumb tribe". (pretty sick name!)

These people rely solely on their mobile phones for all of their "internet" activity. From instant messaging to text, email and mobile web browsing, these people do it all on their mobile!

I was actually inspired by this as I am an avid tech junkie :-) and have now set myself the goal of trying to do as much as I can on my mobiles to see if it can be done with the current technology we have in Australia.

I currently own a Nokia 6131 on Optus. I also use a Palm Zire 31 pda/organiser which I am trying to move away from as much as I can by beaming information across to my phone in an effort to become more of a thumb "tribesman".

My mobile experience may be somewhat limited as I live in country Victoria but you'd be surprised how well I am "managing" in my little experiment.

I currently have set up Gmail on my Nokia.

If you are a like minded person who can't live without their mobile tech then perhaps you feel like emailing me and let me know how you use it, the advantages and disadvantages?!?

Perhaps you hate what is available on mobiles at the moment? If so you can still email and tell me what you hate!

I know I'd love to hear from you all!

cheers,

Ubuntu Linux - FREE FREE FREE

you've probably all heard of linux and if you have you will know you can get it for free online but the versions you download for free ARE DIFFERENT from their "retail" equivalents... if you PAY for the retail versions you will get the whole operating system, not the cut down version with no support

UBUNTU Linux has stepped into the ring and has been delivering blows to the linux community for some time now by offering all their versions for FREE!!!... check them out at http://www.ubuntu.com/

I have copied the rest of this article (with permission from the Ubuntu Linux developers) from the Ubuntu website

What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a community developed operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Whether you use it at home, at school or at work Ubuntu contains all the applications you'll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

Ubuntu is and always will be free of charge. You do not pay any licensing fees. You can download, use and share Ubuntu with your friends, family, school or business for absolutely nothing.

We issue a new desktop and server release every six months. That means you'll always have the the latest and greatest applications that the open source world has to offer.

Ubuntu is designed with security in mind. You get free security updates for at least 18 months on the desktop and server. With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get three years support on the desktop, and five years on the server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version, we make our very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge.

Everything you need on one CD, which provides a complete working environment. Additional software is available online.

The graphical installer enables you to get up and running quickly and easily. A standard installation should take less than 25 minutes.

Once installed your system is immediately ready-to-use. On the desktop you have a full set of productivity, internet, drawing and graphics applications, and games.

On the server you get just what you need to get up and running and nothing you don't.

Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'Humanity to others', or 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

HandyShopper for Palm OS - by Chris Antos

If you have a Palm Organiser / PDA and you write anything in a list then HandyShopper is the FREEWARE program for you!

You may first look at this and say "I don't need a shopping program..!!!", it may be called HandyShopper but it isn't just a shopping program... it is actually a powerful "list / task / to-do" list program which is definitely worth the download.

I have had a Palm since they were first brought out by US Robotics and once I found this program it has gone with me from Palm to Palm as I have upgraded.

One example of how I have used this was when I was working as a storeman. Our inventory in the storeroom crept just over 10,000 parts and believe it or not, i had the entire parts list along with part descriptions all on my Palm with heaps of free memory for all my other apps...

download it, play with it!

Tesltra Next G has better range, finally!

Tesltra has now boosted the range of it's Next G towers increasing the range of each cell up to 200kms, which will, in theory, improve the download rate of it's mobile/wireless broadband service from 3.6Mb/s to 14.4Mb/s... pity about their pricing!

importing your OUTLOOK calendar into MOZILLA SUNBIRD

just sitting here playing around with Mozilla's Sunbird calendar software...

i was trying to export my calendar from Microsoft Outlook into Mozilla Sunbird but every time I did Sunbird kept getting all the appointments mixed up with all the times being jumbled up and appointments appearing on the wrong days! big pain in the butt!

here's one solution I just "nutted" out... It may be a bit of stuffing around for some people but it seems to work (it did for me!)

1. export your calender from Outlook into a .CSV file
2. import it into your Google Calendar account.
3. then export it from here using the .iCal format instead of the .CSV format
4. then go into Sunbird and import the .iCal file and it should all work fine!

** if you know of any others ways of doing this please email me at techjunkie.in.cyberia@hotmail.com and I will post it here **

moving "My Documents"

a quick tip! got 2 hard drives in your pc? sick of having "My Documents" on your C: drive?

if you don't want "My Documents" on your C: drive go to "My Computer", look for "My Computer" on the left hand side, RIGHT click on it, then select "properties".

the first screen you are presented with has a tab called "Target". From here you can select a new location for your "My Documents" and XP will do the rest, moving all your files to your second hard drive!

OpenOffice & Dell possibly getting together

news in today from OpenOffice.org (OpenOffice is the leading FREE software competitor to the Microsoft Office group of programs) is proposing to team up with Dell Computers to possibly have open office installed on every new Dell system sold in the future!

not bad for an open source company! if you use Microsoft Office at work and want an entire office suite to use at home without the hefty cost then OpenOffice is the way to go... it is compatible with Microsoft Office and allows you to edit Microsoft documents and SAVE them in the Microsoft Office format also so you can take them back to work and edit them there.

check out this email that i received this morning...

Text of the letter:

Michael S.Dell, Chairman and CEO
Dell Computer Corporation
One Dell Way
Round Rock, Texas 78682

Dear Michael

Dell Computer Corporation has become one of Fortune's “America’s Most
Admired Companies” by providing great value, high quality computers and
peripherals, but most of all, by listening to your customers. Your
recent “IdeaStorm” initiative is the latest example of this. Here at
OpenOffice.org, we were delighted to see that the second most requested
feature by Dell customers was to have our office software pre-installed
on Dell systems. This request attracted more than 25,000 votes in two
days.

We believe that OpenOffice.org 2 software perfectly matches Dell’s
values. OpenOffice.org 2 is high quality office software, the result of
over twenty years’ continuous software engineering. It runs under all
common operating systems. It offers everything users expect from office
software, plus some bonus features that may pleasantly surprise them.
It’s easy for customers to use, with a familiar look and feel, and can
read and write a wide range of file formats, including Microsoft’s. On
top of all this, being licenced under open-source terms, it represents
outstanding value for money for you and your customers.

Let’s have a conversation about how we could build an “OpenOffice.org
supplied by Dell” product to give your customers what they are asking
for. We’d also be happy to accept any financial contribution that Dell
might offer to help ensure that OpenOffice.org continues to evolve in
the future.

Sincerely

John McCreesh
Marketing Project Lead
OpenOffice.org

passwords passwords passwords

if you want to create a secure password for anything to your internet banking account or just for every day websites then take a visit to the site of our good mate Steve Gibson (https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm) where you will find a completely random password generator. If you are not happy with the password displayed just refresh the page and you will be presented with a new, unique password.

setting up your internet banking can be an absolute pain in the butt when it comes to passwords! some banking systems allow you to create a secure password using any character you like, others have a maximum number of characters their systems are able to handle. Some can only handle numbers and letters, and, what i find more disgusting is that some can only handle numbers!

as you can imagine, this is VERY insecure!

if your bank uses one of these highly insecure systems then protest to your bank in writing and if things don't change perhaps even think of switching banks - I realise this sounds harsh but let's face it, it's your money at stake!

PASSWORD PROGRAMS

I currently use a program called Password Agent which I run from my iPod, then sync to my usb key and backup to my pc! I personally reckon it's great and have used it now for about 14 months with no problems (there is a fee for the full version but you can use it for free with a limited number of passwords). You can sort out your passwords into groups and create passwords using options you choose so if your bank says your password can be 16 characters long with numbers, letters and symbols then you can set this up when you generate a password.

If you are after a free alternative try KeePass Password Safe which is a FREE open source program from a great site called SourceForge.

a perfect system every time!

i don't know about you but i reformat my pc about once a month as i spend a lot of my time testing beta software just for the fun of it ... yes, it's a pain in the butt, but it's a necessary evil...

i came across a beautiful piece of software a few weeks ago called Acronis True Image 10 Home .

as i reformat so often i was getting sick of reinstalling all my "normal" software so i set up my system with Acronis. i installed all the applications i frequently use, downloaded all my windows updates, even went in to all the options menus of EVERY program i use, made everything perfect!

after installing Acronis True Image Home i then rebooted my system (you can run it from windows but i believe it is better to use it at boot up), keep an eye out for the Acronis text on the screen and press F11 when prompted. it will then run the Acronis software in DOS where you can get a true image of your hard drive.

Acronis sets up a hidden partition (about 6-8GB in size) where it stores your image of your hard drive. once completed you then boot into windows and use your system as normal.

bugger up your system, install some dodgy software or just find your system is slowing down to the point you can make a coffee between hitting the enter key and getting a response? all you need to do is reboot your system, look for the Acronis prompt and press F11...

hey presto! an amazingly sexy system just as you had left it "oh so long ago!"

**remember - the image you create will also contain all your data so if this is the only drive you have on your system then YOU NEED TO BACK TO UP!!**

Palm Organiser? replace Graffiti 2 with Graffiti 1

anyone out there who has been into Palm PDA's from day one will be quite disappointed when they upgrade their old Palm to a new "flashy" colour screen model as the newer models have replaced the original method of handwriting (called Graffiti) with "Graffiti 2".

Graffiti is a form of handwriting using what is called a "unistroke" method for text input - each character written is done in one single stroke, starting from a certain point on the screen and writing the symbol in a certain way .

New model Palms use Graffiti 2 which is a pain in the butt! Imagine writing English all your life and being told that "from now on, you will write the letter F by writing a W with a line going through it from right to left! Bloody confusing and I guarantee it will take you several months before you are able to relearn how to write an F properly! This is what Palm did to it's users.

this fix has been around for years but believe me, unless your a tech junkie then you probably haven't been told...

THIS CANNOT BE DONE THROUGH A HOTSYNC, YOU NEED A PALM WITH A MEMORY CARD!

go to http://www.zansstuff.com/programs/graffiti1.zip OR http://www2.zansstuff.com:3390/palm.shtml OR http://gansk.sasktelwebsite.net/unpublished_pics/graffiti1.zip

download the ZIP file from one of these links, extract it and you will have 2 files, Graffiti Library.prc & Graffiti Library_enUS.prc

copy these to your Palm's memory card, i repeat - do not use Hotsync to transfer these files! - once copied to your memory card use a program such as FILEZ (a free file manager for Palm) to copy these 2 files from you memory card to you palm. **bonus is you should never have to download the Graffiti files again as you now have them on your memory card**

once this is done perform a "soft reset" by pushing the reset button on the back of the unit and when your Palm restarts you should be back to the original Graffiti 1 which you know and love!

DON'T BUY A PC...

looking to buy a new pc soon? make sure you get your ORIGINAL Windows cd's/dvd's with your pc otherwise don't buy it!

these words sound harsh but without them you are STUFFED!

I currently have 2 pc's sitting at home (both are the same MAKE and MODEL) with the same problem - missing drivers for the network adapter... anyways, the only place I can get these from is the manufacturer. I cannot use the "recovery" partition as the clients have backed their systems up (as they have the right to do) onto the recovery partition, wiping their only copy of Windows XP with all the drivers also! The drivers "customer support" sent me don't work so the next thing to do is reformat and reinstall Windows from the ORIGINAL installation cd (which will then reinstate the correct drivers).

PROBLEM - there were no cd's supplied and they want $180 per cd per computer!

it seems to me that most pc's today DO NOT come with a copy of Windows. Manufacturers seem to set their systems up with a copy of the windows cd hidden inside the recovery partition, the poor customer left to burn a copy onto cd if they know how to...

It is my understanding that if you purchase a pc with Windows preinstalled then it should ALSO come with the cd for that pc. If you have bought the pc then you OWN the license for the copy of Windows that is on it. If you own the license for it then you should OWN the cd that matches that license... but these companies seem to think that you do not!

This has been confirmed by Microsoft in this email below (I have removed the pc manufacturer's name, nothing else has been changed)...
"please be informed that since "RipOff Computers" has installed the operating system on the recovery partition, "RipOff Computers" have the choice to issue or not issue a copy of the Windows XP Home Edition. The reason being is that since the operating system has been installed on the recovery partition, customers may not need a CD to recover the operating system. Therefore, you may have to purchase the copy of Windows XP Home Edition from "RipOff Computers"."

to me this seems absolutely pathetic! you own the license therefore you own the cd! accept nothing less!

Aussie Tech Head

When I talk to people new in the world of computers one thing I always try and do is point them in the direction of a few good podcasts so they can get a better understanding of the technological world they have just entered...

"Back in the day" some people used to head on down to their "local" for a few beverages and to share a few good yarns with some mates... now, in the age of the processor, we head on down to the study, turn on the pc and download a podcast or two, kick back and relax while we listen to some mates online.

Live in Australia? want a local Aussie podcast? Then Aussie Tech Head is the podcast for you! Glenn and Mark cover a wide range of tech with product reviews, game reviews, interviews with people from the tech industry and discussion about technology news as it happens.

the world is about give and take... give them a listen and you'll take away some knowledge!
